Sicily. On a stormy sea-shore, fisherfolk watch a shipwreck. Among the survivors is Gualtiero. Imogene arrives to offer hospitality to the shipwrecked strangers, but Gualtiero does not reveal himself, and Imogene assumes that he is dead:

Il Pirata (The Pirate) is an opera in two acts by Vincenzo Bellini to an Italian libretto by Felice Romani. It premiered at La Scala on October 27, 1827.


ATTO PRIMO

Spiaggia di mare in vicinanza di Caldora.
All'alzar del sipario è già cominciata un'orrenda tempesta. Vedesi una nave in grave pericolo, sbattuta qua e là dai venti e dai flutti. La riva e gli scogli sono pieni di pescatori, che si sforzano di soccorrere i miseri vicini a naufragare.
A poco a poco tutto il luogo si copre di popolo. La tempesta è al suo colmo.

SCENA QUINTA
Imogene, Adele, Damigelle e detti. Tutti le vanno incontro.

IMOGENE
Sorgete: è in me dover quella pietade,
Che al soccorso m'invia degli stranieri,
Che qui tragge a posar caso o tempesta:
Antica legge di Caldora è questa.
Chi siete, o sventurati?
Donde scioglieste?

ITULBO
La regal Messina
Lasciammo ieri; ed a Palermo volte
Eran le nostre vele.

IMOGENE
A Palermo! Ah! solcaste un mar crudele.
Campo di orribil guerra,
O stranieri, è quel mar.

ITULBO
(Cielo!).

IMOGENE
Vi occorse
Di quei Pirati alcun?

ITULBO
Essi fur vinti,
Spersi... distrutti...

IMOGENE
E il duce lor?

ITULBO
Il duce?
(Qual mai richiesta?)
È forse in ceppi, o spento.

IMOGENE
Spento!...

ADELE
Ah! che fai? ti frena.

Allontanandola dai Pirati.

IMOGENE
(Oh! mio spavento!).
Ad un cenno d'Adele i Pirati si di­ scostano. Imogene prende Adele in disparte.

Lo sognai ferito, esangue,
In deserta, ignuda, riva...
Tutta intrisa del suo sangue,
Da miei gridi il ciel feriva...
Né una voce rispondea;
L'aura istessa, il mar tacea:
Era sorda la natura
Al mio pianto, al mio dolor.

Imogene's long entrance scene with her dreams and fears (first - an image of her lover Gualtiero in blood; then excessively - her husband) isn't beautifully written throughout. Bellini was a very poetic composer in his more elegiac moods: "Lo sognai ferito, esangue" is a moment of great beauty and poetry, followed by some uninspired routine music, and we still are faced with an aria of disconcerting unevenness. I do not desire to offend anyone's love for my favorite composer, I simply wish to explain this selection. Indeed, I would not want to go without Imogene's enchanting "Col sorriso d'innocenza":
