Elegy is the third of four movements in a harp concerto I composed in summer 2010. The movement is monothematic, deriving much of its melodic material from different versions of the theme and its inversion. The theme begins highly chromatic and winding, but by the end becomes diatonic and resolved. Throughout the movement runs a pedal point on Db, which interacts in varying ways with the different tonal centers, making C very dark, C# very peaceful, and G bright, although dissonant. Although the concerto as a whole begins and ends in Ab, this movement progresses from C to Db.
Elegy was performed at the fall, 2010 Living Sounds student composers' concert with Amy Thompson playing the harp and Sean Calhoun playing the piano reduction.
