Concierto de la Orquesta Sinfónica de la Juventud Venezolana "Simón Bolívar" Gustav Mahler, Sinfonía Nº 9 III. Rondo. Burleske Allegro assai. Sehr trotzig Dirige (Conducts): Gustavo Dudamel Caracas, 19/02/2010 CASPM
@darkprose ...and I wouldn't have reacted the way I did if they weren't such an enthusiastic and professional ensemble otherwise. It bothers me when the Berlin, Vienna or New York philharmonic miss crucial entrances like that, too, so I am just holding them to the same standard. Their playing otherwise is near impeccable. Again, I say this as a fan of the orchestra, not a critic. You just have to admit that it was a noticeable miss in this performance.
@vict0rgarcia I was too harsh on them, you're right. I am a fan of this orchestra, I've never heard them live, but I have watched all of their videos here on YouTube, and I guess my reaction was the result of their near perfection in every other performance I've watched. It wouldn't bother me so much, too, but that snare drum snarl is the only time in the whole symphony Mahler asks for it, and it's immensely crucial, even that one time, for the violence of this piece....
@darkprose yet.. they are human.. and you know we make some mistakes.. even more if you are a musician in a concert, man. it doesn't matter how many times you play in front of an audience, you will be always nervous and might get some mistakes, thats the beautiful thing of a Life Concert I would say..
The snare seemed to miss its cue -- for a second you can see Dudamel react to its absence, I think.
Oh, and the timpani player was late, too, at the end. That was very noticeable. Hmm, these lapses are surprising from this orchestra, which, of all the performances I heard of them, are always quite good.
