Americans are very strange people. The job of actors is to ACT, they might act as a police officer, a doctor or agay man. This acting is not professional training to be any of them. I mean, would you ring Hugh Laurie for chest pain?
Not that being gay is anything odd or special, but it's different than playing a MD. One is a profession, the other one is sexual orientation. And, Americans have the "is he gay ?!!" debate WAY less than most of the other nations' people.
