This is my impression of Interactive Surveillance, a live installation by Annabel Manning and Celine Latulipe, held at the Dialect Gallery in the NoDa neighborhood of Charlotte, N.C.
This installation incorporated live video of guests to the event going up and down the stairway. Participants were encouraged to use wireless gyroscopic mice to manipulate simulated lenses on a large video display. When both lenses converged, a picture was taken of the stairway scene, and then automatically sent to Flickr.
The installation also included video art from surveillance videos displayed on another screen, manipulated in the same manner. In the gallery space, participants could view the Flickr photostream on a smaller screen, and also view a narrative video montage of photographs created by Annabel Manning.
The themes explored in the original Interactive Surveillance include border surveillance, shadow, and identity. In this version, another layer is explored, as they are the subject of surveillance as well as the ones who conduct the surveillance.
In a way, my video capture of the event added yet another layer, as I was doing some surveillance while I attended the event. My camera was on "pause" instead of "record", so I didn't get any shots of people interacting with the mice and content.
The video was hastily edited in iMovie. The music and sound effects were taken from the iMovie music library.
