It's believed to be an auto-immune disease. This means that your immune system will attack your hair follicles as it believes your hair is causing your body damage in some way.
Immuno-suppressive drugs are a common way to combat the disease but as of yet there's no treatment which is 100%, which is why so many people have stories like Pam's!
