I don't think it is fair to tell someone what to do with their talent. To me that was pure art! If that is what this person wants to do then fantastic! that was amazing!

as said in another comment the eyes were a bit off, but still certainly well done for the semi photo realistic style you achieved. also. as you said rendering a straight image as you see is the typical way to practice and better yourself in any for of art. a person in most any type of art probably started there and were happy they had. as the most typical way to help you see and render.
i think that if anyone was shown a photo, and then shown it was actually a painting..thats impressive.
