This is a demo video simulating portal rendering in Blender using layer rendering and alpha masks using render nodes.

Basically, in addition to the animated cube, I created six additional layers, each with it's own unique scene. I parented the cube to everything in all the other layers so everyone would rotate with the cube. I also created six more layers with a copy of the animated cube and made a side of the cube ambient white and leaving everything else black with no lighting. These layers became my alpha masks.

I also used vector blur nodes to add in some motion blur.

You can find out how to do alpha masking here: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Tutorials/Compositing/ChromaKey

Since my video didn't need any sort of chroma-keying I didn't using any green-screening, just alpha masks.

You can download the original Blender file here: http://www.box.net/shared/n28v262o0k

You can also download the simple version which only uses 3 layers for only one side of the cube instead of 13 layers for all six sides which might be easier to understand: http://www.box.net/shared/l2l7ioxkw4

  • this is a good Idea for an animation or video game. A guy runs across a cube portal that can take him into any dimension.

  • nice, but i could see an 1frame balckness when at the end you go into the portal

  • Cool!

  • For science!

  • EPIC

  • that is incredible!
