I remember seeing this on TV a long time ago, the host of the wildlife show was, I think, Marty Stoffeur (sp)? The mother bear was weak because she had been without food for a while, and the caribou was a wounded animal, unable to keep up with the herd. The mother was desparate for food, especially with cubs to look after.

That Caribou was sick. Those animals are constantly moving this one stood it's ground, it had to be hurt.
