The old Severn Bridge, all to myself

This is a Sunday morning drive across the old Severn motorway Bridge. I believe it was opened in about 1970 and there are continuing maintenance problems with it. Apparently some of the thousands of steel supporting cables have snapped, due to a rust problem. Work is ongoing, as it has been for many years. The recent opening of the new bridge a few miles further west has taken away a lot of traffic from this wonderful old structure. Actually, it's two bridges, one after the other. Look out for the single supporting tower (pole? pylon?) of the Wye river bridge, immediately after the main estuary bridge. And see the dual language English/Welsh road signs on the other side!

trouble is that the cross winds over the severn (especially the new crossing) can blow a car over 2 lanes if you are going too fast. For our £5.30 they should put up wind speed signs so we can judge how fast before we almost get swept into the side of a lorry!

The bridge has a main span of 988 meters, which he apparently crossed in 35 seconds, and that translates to 63 mph / 102 km/h.

It was opened on the 8th September 1966
