EXTRACT FROM 'CALEDONIA UBER ALLES' FANZINE INTERVIEW WITH EDWARD BALL OF THE TIMES UK POP GROUP, 1985 (UNPUBLISHED)
CUA; Who are your all time heroes?
EB; No one in music, that's for sure. Patrick McGoohan, Lindsay Anderson - i dunno - just people who wanna hold a revolver to the temple of society, really.
"Like us she believed in the poetry of the everyday". This statement alone explains why Anderson and the Free Cinema people produced magical, humane, deeply moving work. Even the titles themselves seem to encapsulate something lyrical, Blakean even.....O Dreamland.....O Lucky Man!

Lindsay Anderson was one of the best ever British film directors, and had deep insight into the problems of UK cinema - which have been endemic over the years. He made some excellent programmes ln the 1980s about the UK film industry, of which he was very critical since it neglected the documentary tradition in favour of seeing film as 'inherently American' - the David Puttnam mainstream view. Sir Richard Attenborough acted as a peacemaker between the two, perhaps bridging many traditions!

Great stuff. Any chance of posting the whole show? It's a shame it wasn't (or maybe couldn't be) included on the BFI's Free Cinema DVD.
