The following is a short document of my nine-day trip to Berlin in March 2009. Viktor is currently living in Germany and I escaped the crappy weather of NY to enjoy the same crap weather over there. Shavanna randomly happened to visit for a few days and makes a cameo as do Mariko and Hallie. A big thank you to Vik, Nick, Michelle, Tiffy the oversized cat and the rest of their flatmates for letting me stay and showing us a good time. Also thank you Ruben, Alejandro and the Uovo peoples for bringing us to a Bushwick-style "leggings" party in Europe. As per usual, no thanks to airport security for stressing my hand inspection requests for the film cartridges.
Some notable sites in this short include the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburger Tor, TV Tower, Teufelsberg, Monument to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Libeskind-designed Jewish Museum and the Soviet War Memorial at Tiergarten. A few notes: I follow a brick line on the ground which is a marking of where the Berlin Wall once stood in that area. Also you'll notice a bizarre white dome that we were given a treasure map in order to find. At the top of Teufelsberg (Devil's Mountain), there's an abandoned spy station which was constructed by the Allies to monitor East Germany's activities until the fall of the wall. The mountain itself is an artificial hill built on rubble from the second world war. Filmmaker David Lynch has purchased the property to build a temple/university for his transcendental meditation clan. Lastly, Viktor scales a replica of the Berlin Wall which was built for children to climb on inside a sandbox. Pretty amazing, enjoy.
