Gail Laule, from Active Environments, uses protected contact to work with Lulu, an African elephant at the PAWS ARK 2000 sanctuary. Protected contact is a method of managing elephants using voluntary cooperation and positive reinforcement to provide the care they need in captivity.

  • Why train the elephant? What do you want her cooperation for specifically?

  • @veggiewarriors Veterinarian care and foot care.

  • @PAWSWEB

Thank you for replying and for the extraordinary work you do.

I have another question. I was watching an interview of Pat Derby recently where she mentions that she is against captivity but not zoos per se.

Since I'm not from America, I was wondering which zoos in this country afford socially complex creatures especially captive elephants animals a relatively higher quality of life.

  • @veggiewarriors Pat Derby's reply: "I have not visited all zoos, but I have found Detroit Zoo, Oakland Zoo and North Carolina Zoo to have high ethical standards regarding animal care, with the caveat that we do not support captive breeding."

  • @PAWSWEB Gerald Durrell was the best advocate of zoos, and he only supported captive breeding in the cases of severely endangered species, I agree with this method.

  • I love you guys. The elephants do too.
