Marchers protested spending cuts at a mass demonstration in Edinburgh on 23rd Oct. Called by the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC), vast numbers of trade unions, students, other campaigning groups, political parties, activists, individuals and families turned out for the demonstration. 20000 in all attended the march. There were plenty of musicians on the demo: the march was headed by a pipe band and there were two brass bands and two individual pipers, one accompanied by a percussionist. Masses of people assembled in East Market St, marched the length of the street, turned down the Mound on to Princes St, marched to the far end of Princes Gardens and down the steps back into the park and to the Ross bandstand for a rally. This video covers the middle part of the protest after the demonstration has started marching up East Market St, past North Bridge, the road that leads to Waverley Station, continues up to the mound and onto Princes St and a section of the demo in Princes Gdns.
The Westminster government held the final review of their budget 3 days earlier on 20th Oct and as feared the cuts they announced were severe. Smaller demonstrations were also held on that day while the review was taking place, such as the one in Glasgow's George Square. Those demonstrations, as well as being a protest to Westminster were also a warning to local and Scottish governments not to do the same thing as Westminster. Severe cuts have been frequently made since the 80's under the Thatcher government and continued by New Labour who moved even further to the right of what the conservatives had been. So much so that some people began to wonder if going back to a Tory government might not be so bad after all - but it has just been proven that it is indeed possible to get even worse than New Labour as Cameron and his government have shown with their savage attacks on jobs and services and welfare going even further than New Labour's plans for cuts earlier this year.

Action against cuts has been continuing and the TUC called a demo in London on 26th March '11 which numbered the 100's of 1000's, nearly half a million. The STUC is now planning a march with the slogan " people first - there is a better way " on behalf of anti-poverty, faith, equality and campaign groups and others in Glasgow on 1st Oct 2011 with a rally in Kelvingrove Park and fringe meetings in nearby buildings afterwards. There will also be a fundraising initiative to help those hit by famine disaster in Africa. The aim of the demo will be to challenge poverty levels and campaign for a redistribution of wealth across the country and across the UK, protect those hardest hit by service and benefit cuts and help rebuild and reconnect Scotland's communities.
