Albania has been declared as official mine-free, following the hand over of the last mine-affected areas of land to the people of Borja Village, who reside on Albania's northern frontier with Kosovo in the Region of Kukes.

In all, thirty-nine villages in the districts of Kukes, Has and Tropoja with a total population of 25,000 people were directly affected by the presence of land mines, cluster munitions and unexploded ordnance emanating from the Kosovo conflict in 1999.

Since 1999 over 16 million square meters of land has been cleared and handed over to local communities for productive use. In all, a total of 12,452 anti-personnel mines, 152 anti-tank mines and 4,965 unexploded ordinances were found and destroyed.
