I've made a video, hopefully making it easier for you to figure out how to boost your itrips power and get clearer sound from it without excess static.
I'm not sure if it's because it's using the cable as an antenna or if the iTrip notices that there's a cable plugged into the charging port, has been designed to assume that if there's a cable there's power, and thus boosts power to the transmitter's antenna. I personally figure that both scenarios make perfect sense all things considered—many portable radios and phones that have FM tuners will use the headphone cables as part of the antenna and many portable devices run better when plugged in.
I've found out something intriguing about this model of iTrip and I'm not entirely sure what does this. Anyway, I purchased a micro-USB to USB cable since I wanted to be able to charge the iPod through this device—which doesn't work with the older PowerJolts. I noticed that the iTrip's signal was weak when the iPod sat certain ways in the car, but actually broadcast a clearer signal when the micro-USB cable was attached!
I found another hack for this iTrip - if you hit menu, then press and hold the "reset" key, you can cycle between EU, US and JP regional modes.
EU and JP lets you choose lower transmitting frequencies (below 88.1) and also lets you adjust the frequency in single steps.
The downside is that FM radio in Europe and Japan uses a different pre-emphasis curve, so the audio will sound muffled on US radios if EU or JP mode is set.
@bludika I found switching to international mode and using a frequency such as 87.7 works much better since US frequencies are 88.1 and above.
