  • @railwalker1 ~ I have waited to respond because I am not sure how to. Vietnam was an overwhelming place to be. Nobody laid in bed waiting to die from a chronic illiness. Those that died, and I knew many, left this world instantly, and violently. And those are memories I have never been able to escape from. But it is important that I thank you, personally, for caring about me and all the others that served in that living hell. I know, now, that individuals like you are far more important.

  • @MrRonnieG --You fought a war and came home to an ungrateful nation ,we all should be THANKING YOU!

Thank you ,I wish you the best today and always..Merry Christmas --

  • I asked the love of my life (Kathy) to marry me while listening to this same 45 RPM single. It was April of 1968, I was just 21 and she a month for 20. Sadly, on the 5th of February 1969 I was drafted and by June of that year I was in Southeast. In August she wrote that she simply could not wait for me. I will never ever forget the pain of that hot August late afternoon in

Vietnam. Tens of years have passed but I will never forget her or that moment.

  • @MrRonnieG --Vietnam was not the best of times, for us or this Country..

Have 4 things to tell you---

    1. Appreciate you going-

2.Happy and grateful you made it back

3.Your girl was Not a Keeper --if she couldn't wait a year there's no way she'd stayed for a lifetime..

4.Don't lose tomorrow.reaching back for yesterday--never to late to BE HAPPY !

  • Is this original? Who wrote this song? I love it....Thanks

  • Written by Jerry Liivingstone and P.F.Webster--it went to #9 on the Billboard charts in Oct,of 1957,charted for 14 weeks..The "A" side had gone to #1 in September of 57,stayed on the charts for 22 weeks--song called "Chances Are"..Both songs have been recorded by other artists since then but no-one did them as well as Johnny did,.

  • Yes, many sad stories. But let’s remember that Mathis was the king of make out music in the 50's and try to dwell on the good things. Let's try to live in the now. There are much more sad stories in our future should we not rise to our calling, yet once again, and fight for what is good and right in this world. Think of those who were born into this world not having anything to say about the way it is run or what is done to them.

  • This was my Mom and Dads song they would have celebrated 50 years this November 4 but cancer took Mom in 2009.My amazing, thoughtful girlfriend posted a link to this video on my Facebook on their anniversary. It took my breath away in its simplicity and grace. What a wonderful clip and what a wonderful woman I am blessed with.

  • @MrRonnieG P.S. I have tears now after reading your story. This is such a beautiful song, I hope you did meet the woman who loves you enough to stay by your side, be it any of your tours of duty or any of life's hard times, until the 12th of never. God Bless and may all your days be happy. I'm from the Vietnam era and I do know how truly awful that time was.

  • @MrRonnieG You were in Hell and got a Dear John letter. How awful that must have been. I have great empathy for you. If she couldn't wait for you to come home from that particular hell, she obviously was NOT good enough for you. Thank You, thank you for going. WE are lucky you were able to come home after your service for our country. I remember the reception soldiers got when they came home and I'm ashamed of the conduct of most. When I hear this song now, I will always think of you.

  • Hey Railwalker- Like Ronnie G I appreciate your service and glad you came back- not in a body bag. I served from 77-1990. I know what it's like to lose love espcially when you are 1000;s of miles away.It happens to us females too.

Drive on buddy- and best of luck

  • @MrRonnieG Sweet and sad story Mr.Ronnie, I'm happy you made it back from that experience safely.....I hope you are happily married with 20 grandchildren, or not!!

  • For September ..........You are the Love of my life, I Love you Forever xxxxxx

  • It is my understanding that the basic melody goes back centuries........."I gave my love a cherry"........an old Brit tune.
