@Prancer1231 Like many Russian productions, this one is changed so that Clara performs all of the Sugar Plum Fairy's dances and the Nutcracker Prince performs all of the Cavalier's dances. To me, that makes more sense. Otherwise Clara and the Prince would have to sit out all of Act II without dancing, as in the Balanchine version. I think it should be done in a way that shows that Clara and the Prince are in love.

@hyancinth70 I was wondering where it was...and Mother Ginger as well?

I couldn't imagine The Nutcracker ballet not being apart of my holiday tradition. I've watched this my entire life.

My most very favorite ballet film since I was ten (1978)

@Prancer1231 Baryshnikov had to omit the Arabian Dance, due to time constraints, when he produced this.

The choreography, costumes and acting in Baryshnikov's production helped make it such a holiday staple for a time, I can't help believing that Balanchine's version leads by default for his use of the whole score and all the characters. Too bad Baryshnikov didn't do a fuller version and edit it down for TV; some characters still would have been missing as their dances were done by the principals(the Sugar Plum and Dewdrop Fairy). The puppet dances, sword dance and Dance Chinoise stand out.

Why don't they play it on PBS anymore like they used to every year!!??!?? It drives me crazy and makes me so sad because this is the only version of the nutcracker I grew up with and have always loved it from watching it as a child every Christmas season on PBS in the quiet of my bedroom in brooklyn. What drives me even more crazy is every yr ovation ch has their battle of the nutcrackers marathon and this version is never in the contest!?
For those of us who don't live in London or NYC, or Milan,. or Paris, or Moscow, or St. Petersburg, but sequestered in sleepy towns where ballet is never seen live, sharing these full and beautiful performances with us on YouTube is a wonderful gift.
Thank you.
