Part 4/4 of "Richard Dawkins' Age of Reason: Faith Schools Menace?"
Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=8D112A2969F422C0

Aired August 18, 2010 on Channel 4.

The number of faith schools in Britain is rising. Around 7,000 publicly funded schools - one in three - now has a religious affiliation.

As the coalition government paves the way for more faith-based education by promoting 'free schools', the renowned atheist and evolutionary biologist Professor Richard Dawkins says enough is enough.

In this passionately argued film, Dawkins calls on us to reconsider the consequences of faith education, which, he argues, bamboozles parents and indoctrinates and divides children.

The film features robust exchanges with former Secretary of State for Education Charles Clarke, Head of the Church of England Education Service Reverend Janina Ainsworth, and the Chair of the Association of Muslim Schools, Dr Mohammed Mukadam.

It also features insights from child psychologists and key players in faith education as well as insights from both parents and pupils.

Dawkins also draws on his own personal history as a father, arguing that the government must stop funding new faith schools, and urges society to respect a child's right to freedom of belief.

  • The Prof loathes religion in school.[ I agree!.] The problem arises with him trying to propoate his particular discipline to impressionable children. He is replacing the religion One might argue, "Yes, but evolution is proven fact." Horse feathers! It is NOT! It is merely a concept laden with thousands of IMPLICT exhibits bouncing along a rut of circular reasoning.Evolution is a theory. If religion goes why not evolution too? Let parents teach whatevert. Prof.is too preacher like for my taste.

  • @ 9:30 Look at those giant eyes of wonder as the children listen to Dawkins talk, isn't that what education is supposed to be all about?

  • some get it right :)

  • I noticed that he brought up his daughter. Does anyone know anything about her? I wonder what her beliefs and thoughts are.

  • @chattanlad im sure im the thousandth person to reply to your absolutely ridiculous and dare i say even dangerously stupid comment but evolution is not a theory its a fact, and more importantly its the ONLY serious considerable explanation we have when questioning our origins...even if evolution was completely wrong , "god did it" is NOT an answer and should not be tolerated at this stage in our social development. please please look up the definition of the word theory

  • I totally agree! Education is the key, anyone with a true education will be opened minded and begin to question.....

  • @chattanlad We have the evidence that proves evolution....look at it.

  • @tyme4mike because we don't como from chimps, we both come from a common ancestor

  • @chattanlad

just please quit typing, you're embarrassing yourself.

  • @tyme4mike they exist, but sadly, since evolution is a GRADUAL process that takes place of MILLIONS of years, you will not find any great ape that magically has a human arm. What you do find is that slowly over lots of time, their arms shortened and became what we recognized as human. Also, as a further note, we didnt evolve from chimps, chimps are our cousins. We both evolved from a common ancestor.

  • @chattanlad I concur with Chattanlad. Where are fossils that show the changes that must happen within the evolutionary process if one is to "buy into evolution as more than just a theory"? I guess if someone was paying me millions to do scientific research on such an unprovable theory, I suppose I'd be making an argument in favour of it too. Again, why are there no fossils that show living organisms in the midst of evolutionary change? ie: a chimpanzee with human limbs? Chattanlad is correct.
