Captain John McDermid served with the Royal Highland Fusiliers, the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland. He was killed when the patrol he was leading was hit by a roadside bomb in the Sangin district of Helmand Province. Captain McDermid (43) had served the regiment, the Army and his country for 21 years as a soldier and for the last three as an officer. "He represented everything that is special about the Army and the Royal Highland Fusiliers," said his commanding officer. He added: "John was a friend and mentor to everyone . . . his death will leave a gap in all our lives." A statement by his family said: "Everyone who knew John knew how loving, dedicated, strong and truly wonderful he was . . . his death has left a void that can never be filled."
