1991: An Open Letter To The United States Congress From Former American Hostages In Iran

Dear Members:

The Iran Hostage crisis of 1979-1980 was a very trying time for our nation. The people and government of the United States were shocked and angered as the Iranian revolutionary forces attempted to use the U.S. Embassy hostages as political pawns. Efforts to gain freedom for those who were held proved frustrating and difficult. After 444 days of captivity, the hostages were returned, but the impact continues to affect us.

For the last ten years there have been rumors, reports and allegations of foul play in the 1980 presidential election. The thought that any American, whether a private citizen or government official, may have participated in delaying release of the hostages for political gain is distressing. Until recently, theses allegations have been unsubstantiated. But substantial enough information has been presented by respected and persistent investigators to warrant a thorough examination of this matter. It is not appropriate to say there is insufficient proof-until there has been an official investigation.

The question of whether there is evidence of any wrongdoing must be answered by an unbiased, bipartisan congressional investigation with full subpoena power. Unless this happens, speculation and unanswered questions will erode public confidence in our electoral system.

Respectfully,

Charles W. Scott, Barry Rosen, Moorhead Ken
nedy, Jerry Plotkin, David M. Roeder, Robert C. Ode, Kevin J. Hermening, Donald R. Hohman.

  • Nixon denied this to President Johnson.

  • Of course he would. No one would admit to treason. Except Reagan's fall guy Oliver North of course. :)

  • If you didn't know, the guy who Johnson won't name in the tape was Kissinger. This was Nixon's mole in the '68 peace talks.

  • BOTH and ALL White House officials should ALWAYS be aggressively prosecuted for such behavior. This INCLUDED LBJ for the bogus attacks on two US destroyers in the Tonkin Gulf in Aug., '64 called the Tonkin Gulf Incident which LBJ used as the excuse to officially start the war in Vietnam. Nixon should have been tried for treason of lying to America with his promise to end the war. It only ended in '75 AFTER Nixon resigned in disgrace.

  • Nixon sold out his country and cost thousands of American lives. No doubt he should have been tried for treason. He also lied to the American people by saying he had a plan to end the war quickly. It didn't end for another five years and 50,000 lives later.

  • Nixon was a crook.

  • @steveforsane Why did LBJ wait until early '68 to get serious about negotiations? And the bombing halt ...1 week before the election. He was playing politics, too.

  • esb84 You can't reason with those nut cases!! They are consumed with hatred! Johnson is one of our great presidents! He did more for America, since FDR...He was on verge of peace with the Vitnemese untill tricky Dick stepoped in....behind the government's back and halted the progress whih was being made by Johnson. As for the LBJ had Kennedy mudered nuts, they are on a wild fairy tale. If there was a plot-it was brought on by the Kennedys themselves-they ran with powerful corrupt circles!

  • Thanks for posting this, I'm sure the LBJ killed JFK nutcases won't be viewing it anytime soon though...

  • Yes, I don't think that President Johnson believed him. :-D
