Title: Small-Molecule Antagonist of an Inflammatory Cytokine Enhances Migration of Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Bonnie Barrilleaux and Katie Russell
Dance your PhD

Institution: Tulane University

Song: Freedom Dance/Vanessa Williams

After systemic infusion, some mesenchymal stem cells can home to a site of injury and contribute to tissue repair, but the majority of cells are lost. This work has the potential to improve the delivery of mesenchymal stem cells to injured tissue, by identifying and eliminating factors that inhibit the cells' innate homing ability.

In this video, we depict a mesenchymal stem cell (dancer 1) whose migration is inhibited by the presence of an inflammatory cytokine (pink scarves). A small-molecule inhibitor (dancer 2) is able to bind and remove the cytokine, restoring the natural migratory ability of the stem cell.

  • This is great. I only wish you could defend your thesis with an interpretive dance.

  • Lots of people have joked about "writing" papers in interpretive dance, but this is the first time I've actually seen someone *doing* it... XD
