I'm a huge fan of the movie with Robert Preston and saw this Broadway production. I agree, he basically impersonated Robert Preston's every nuance to a "T." It was good in one way, because it was entertaining to see what an amazing job he did. But in another way it was distracting because I kept thinking "wow, he did that just like Robert Preston." Overall, it was good. I do agree, he didn't go wrong, though. Unlike Matthew Broderick's TV version. I actually fell asleep during that! Too subdued.

perhaps bierko modeled his vocal approach after preston's, figuring that there was no way he could go wrong that way.
