The country has many historical mosques present throughout the cities and towns, including many in Istanbul. It is the main religion of the Turkish people, where the CIA World factbook states that 99.8% of Turkey's population are nominally Muslims. According religiosity polls 97.8% of the population is Muslim. Most Muslims in Turkey are Sunnis forming about 70-80%, and Alevis of the Shia-sect form about 20-30% of the Muslim population. There is also a Twelver Shia community which forms about 3% of the Muslim population.

@DEVRIMCI2007 you statistics are comical and reflect nothing more than your opinion. i am a turkish statistician. can you please explain where you got such erroneous stats from? im curious. turkey is made of diverse ethnicities but thde overwhelming majority of turks are hanafi while kurds are predominantly shafi. these are both mainstream islamic schools of law. there is slso a strong revitalisation of islam which has been suppressed i turket merging hence the akp. i love the akp
