Taiwan's absence from United Nations also exclude it from U.N. General Assembly or Security Council, but also prevents Taiwan from participating in U.N.'s network of peripheral organizations governing economic development, trade, finance, education, culture and health.

PRESIDENT CHEN SAID that d main obstacle 2 Taiwan's U.N. entry was People's Republic of China, whose obstruction had caused Taiwan to be excluded from U.N. for 36 years.
Chen compared d "36 years of Martial Law" imposed by the PRC's ruling Chinese Communist Party against Taiwan to d KMT's 38 years of Authoritarian Martial Law rule that oppressed Taiwan until July 1987.
