This was actually a strong generation of players. In 82 Ireland were in a group with France, Belgium (then a world class team and the Netherlands, and nearly qualifed. And qualifying for 8 places for a tournament against 30 or so other strong or decent teams was very hard.

Well said distant voices. I was there in landsdowne that day and there seems to be more Danish fans that day. Back in 1985 it was cool to like the Irish football team. But after 1990, we got all the glory hunters in. Sivebacks goal was class.

Fair dues to The Danes in this qualifier. They put us to the sword.
Cusiously though, in the '86 WC they got an even worse hammering than us by The Spanish.
The Danes were amazing to watch though. Trashing Uruguay 6-1 and The Greeks 7-1...
Lovely.
And knocking out EN-GER-LAND out of Euro '84.

I love Ireland and the Irish people. Nothing better than enjoying a pint of Guinness in the company of friendly Irish people at a pub in Dublin.
Back then you did have a lot of good players, but for some reason failed to deliver. You did beat the U.S.S.R. 1-0 though and later qualified for the European Championship 3 years later.
