By pausing during a BLJ, you can release the 'a' button but not have to have mario move as he normally would. This allows mario to blj 30 times a second, if you don't count all the pause time, and allows mario to gain more speed in less of an area.
This is from an old video I uploaded, and it shows how 4 air bljs were saved by this trick.
Enjoy
I know NOTHING about SM64 TASing, but couldn't you do something like this with frame-by-frame TASing?

@SputniksArmy Then it's just a normal BLJ. Pausing in between jumps lets you jump more in a shorter amount of space.

@TheSuperSmashBrother but what if you just pressed A every two frames, instead of one? so one frame is spent not pressing a, then a after.

@1Bowser64 The pause BLJ works because if you were to press a button once every frame, you'd just be holding it. Mario would only jump once. Thusly, you alternate buttons. One frame you press A, and two frames are spent pausing and unpausing. The game will behave as though you were pressing A once every frame, except the game will recognize it as just pressing A once every 3 frames.
I hope that lets you get a grasp on it.

@tom4465 iirc 1 frame is saved in BitDW by using PBLJ, the 0 star TAS is already about 7 seconds infront. going to be awesome to watch.
