    Having said that, I can understand why the HT is often recommended as a first rig for new operators....Size, mobility, ability to use batteries and enough power to hit repeaters being a big reason without the added complexity of power supplies and antennas. Since getting my second rig, a Yaesu FT-897D, I NOW have my sights set on a HT.

    Personally, I bought a dual bander 50w VHF/UHF rig for base/mobile for my first radio. Particularly, an Alinco DR 635T
