Remember, Barbra recorded this when she's a lot older whereas Celine recorded hers when she was young and her vocals is at its peak.. yet.. Barbra's version is better. Celine takes it in terms of range, but her version lacks the warmth & impeccable phrasing in Barbra's.
as Gaga can't top Madonna, Celine likewise can't top Barbra

Never be working on a picture of Grendel's Mother grieving him while listening to this...with the John Gardner version in mind.
Though, it makes it just a little bit more heartbreaking.
Note to self: When/if I get a movie done of this, get Sissel Kyrkjebo to sing it.

this is so much better than celine's without a doubt, the range is so much wider, the pitch is better, and you can understand every word....at the start of celine's you can't understand what she's saying !! Celine is a mess !

Barbra's rendition is wonderful, as is Regina Belles....The one who brings me to tears from beginning to end is Ray Charles version....none can compare!!!!

I think Celine's version is still better, more heartfelt and makes me cry.... Barbra's version is great but her pitch is just to thin and has this piercing/painful quality to the ear
