The VENUS undersea laboratory, off the coast of British Columbia, is helping scientists study a seasonal dead zone in Saanich Inlet off the coast of Vancouver Island. Underwater monitoring instruments, linked to onshore labs by optical-fibre cable, provide continuous real-time data that shows how changes in the levels of dissolved oxygen in ocean water affect marine life—a case study that sheds light on other dead zones around the world.
