i bought a godaddy hosting plan then installe joomla upon it . i never used an ftp client . do i need to go into my hosting account to find the root directory ?? its just i cant seem to find it when i log into joomla as an admin from the back end

it's just i've been looking there and i cant find a root directory .

You need to have access to the files on your webserver (FTP or w\e)
Then you need to find the root of the website (where you can find a index.html or index.php file / images folder)
Templates folder is in the root of your website called "templates" there you have to find the template your using, and this is the root of your template

i have created a favicon for my joomla site . can anyone tell me where to place the html code ??
is it within my web site template under the head section ??
+ where is the root folder on joomla 1.5 and am i gonna have to search for joomla ico files and delete them before my own favicon shows up in the url bar ??

You need to put the favicon in the root directory of the template (replace the one in the template folder with yours)
no need to add any html code...
