Julius Reubke: Sonata on the 94th Psalm, performed by Ignace Michiels on the excruciatingly hot Sunday afternoon concert in the Notre-Dame of Paris, 22nd July 1989.

A note about the sound:

The much needed organ restoration began in 1990, which is the year just after this recording was made. This means the organ was quite "ill". There was huge loss of wind, unstable wind pressure, and this resulted in a completely untuned sound. Just to give an idea about how bad it was: Latry included a note on his Vierne recordings (1988) in which he warned the listener that it was the organ and not his audio installation making the hissing background sound. The same warning applies to this recording.
Besides, the organ was quite out of tune during the concert; it had been very hot and humid.

Furthermore, before this recording was digitalized, it was carried on a cassette, and had been played extensively. Add to this the loss of sound due to the compression on youtube (and the mp3 artifacts - especially obvious when the chamades enter), and the sound descends just under mediocre on the quality scale.

Nonetheless, this may be considered a historical recording on the Cochereau organ, and a rather convincing display of Reubke's genius.

  • Wow great performance! I assume at the time of this recording the combination action was still non operational and the organ had been hand registered?

  • Really exciting performance, the organ does not detract from such a display of virtuosity!

  • A blistering performance, which is actually helped (rather than hindered) by the deficiencies in the organ. Bravo!
