Most of the ones that whine about the poor in this work are living large off of the fruits of the labor of others and actually harming the poor while doing so. They use it as a smoke screen to enrich themslves and screw the poor hand while doing so.

Given that the brother freely goes up to Rearden and asks him for money.. the family obviously know he's not cheap... but yet they subtly accuse him of being cheap when he gifts his wife Rearden metal. It would take an extremely ignorant lot to not understand the gesture was sentimental, any half decent women would understand that.

Not really. My best friend has two jobs and works more than her mother, and what is the thanks she gets? A whole lecture about how her step sister( who is preppy and lives in a stable 2 parent household) so much better than her because she doesn't wear ear gauges.

the wife's character is not unrealistic, how often do you come upon a wife who really loves and appreciates her husband, a husband who is very busy and doesnt spend time with her. If it was from the women's perpective you would have hated Rearden but since its his point of view you sympathise with him. Maybe its just me but I've witnessed something like that way too often in my life.

Read the book, it's within the first 100 pages. This scene was a lot different in the book, the movie didn't give it justice.

Lillian comes off as sarcastic in this. In the novel, I got the impression that she was more patronizing than sarcastic.

The world of the novel is it's own - It reminds me of Kafka , had Kafka wanted to elaborate on the Little Red Hen . It might be argued that characters and plot don't need to ring true to make blindingly obvious moral points . I like it (the novel) - it's like steampunk .

I dont know a women in the world who wouldn't be absolutely thrilled by Hank's gesture. That witch of a wife is unrealistic and Ayn Rand must take a very dim view of human nature if she thinks that women's narcissistic reaction is anything like a normal women's reaction. Ayn Rand's philosophy doesn't hold if the portrayal of the characters is unrealistic. Which it is.
