Well, a sailor's flute is rather difficult to find. Entirely metal, but no articulation. And the line has to be drawn somewhere.

I meant why modern-versions of the instruments. The flute dates back 30,000 years or more. All-metal flutes with articulated stops? Renaissance period flutes were wood and had only finger holes..

The flute dates back to at least 1400, the harp further, and the cello, well, 1600's.
