Aperture Foundation at The New School: Confounding Expectations XII: Invisible. Surveillance
PARSONS THE NEW SCHOOL FOR DESIGN | http://www.newschool.edu/parsons
Since its invention, the camera has been used to make images surreptitiously and satisfy the desire to see what is hidden. Images captured and relayed on camera phones, YouTube, or reality TV bring to light issues of voyeurism, privacy laws, freedom of media, and surveillance. Techniques of surveillance are closely linked to developments in photographic technology, from early aerial photographs to satellite pictures. This panel examines how we see the invisible in the 21st century—cameras on street corners and in shops and public buildings silently record our every move—while web-based tools such as Google Earth adapt satellite technology to ensure that there is no escape from the camera's all-seeing eye.
Participants include:
• Trevor Paglen, artist, Covert Operations and Classified Landscapes
• Marko Peljhan, artist, Projekt Atol
• Jill Magid, artist.
