On 29 March 2011, students at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, shut down the scheduled Board of Governors (BoG) meeting after the body refused to consider a motion calling for divestment of pension stock from four companies implicated in Israel's occupation of Palestine.

The direct action was led by Students Against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA), and received the support and participation of 25 allied campus student groups, as well as faculty, staff and community members.

  • I am so proud of you - all of you who have taken this courageous stand for human rights and freedom for the people of Palestine. I was one of the student activists who organized for divestment from South Africa in the 1980s at the University of Minnesota. We had a lot of success with that struggle, but back then very few people would listen to us about Palestine. The tide is changing today, thanks to all of you. Stay strong, never give up, This is our time, and this time we will win.

  • @ LearnedHand2008

    Playing the anti-Semitic card. Weak.

This campaign fights for the freedom, equality, justice, dignity & human rights for all in Israel-Palestine. How can you equate equal recognition of humanity of Palestinians to the annihilation of Jews? That is simply pathetic & a shameful misappropriation of the history of Jewish suffering. I'm sure Jewish Voices for Peace & the multiple Jewish SAIA members & students who were at the rally would disagree with your vile insinuations.

  • I love how this anti-Israel video uses Martin Luther King Jr. as he was actually a supporter of Israel who said, "When people criticize Zionists, they mean Jews. You’re talking anti-Semitism."

  • GO SAIA!

  • This will be my proudest Canadian moment in my life time. To see people all over Canada and Globally to stand up, strength in numbers occupation for all of our rights. Here in Canada 2 days before Remembrance Day, all I see on the news is how they are systematically shutting down the Occupation movement. We are taught that WAR is how you get PEACE. Yet peaceful occupation cannot be tolerated. May this be our shining moment in time when the voice of many will overcome the elite !

  • GO CARLETON :'D

  • Self-important, arrogant students w too much time on their hands. Direct your anger and energy into something that can really make an impact and then you can earn the respect and seriousness you are so desperately seeking. Get a life all of you. You have no idea about the level of hard work and maturity needed to really make positive changes in the world. Grow up and stop disrespecting the world. Shame on all of you.

  • Well done! You are an inspiration. Palstine will be free and Israel will pay for the war crimes it has been committing for over 60 years in Palestine!
