Israeli offensive in Gaza to halt at midnight
Israel says it is wrapping up operations in Gaza as its objectives have been realised. Under the proposed ceasefire, that's scheduled to come into effect midnight GMT, troops will remain in Gaza, but suspend combat for 10 days.
In addition, border crossings into Israel and Egypt will remain closed while provision is made to stop arms smuggling into Gaza.
Speaking after a Cabinet meeting to vote on the ceasefire deal proposed by Egypt, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert hailed the operation against Hamas, which, he says, will take years to recover.
But Hamas says it will continue fighting until Israeli troops leave Gaza.
On Saturday, the onslaught raged into its forth week.
Palestinian medics say 1140 Palestinians have been killed, while the Israeli side claims thirteen Israelis have died.

They have stopped operations for one reason and one reason alone. They know Obama does not offer them unconditional support as past administrations always have. They are afraid his Obama will side against them with Palestine. That is why they have stopped, and that is why they acted before he took office.

For me, the funniest part is that the border crossings will remain closed. To get them open, Hamas will have to negotiate terms with an international group of diplomats.(France,Egypt,UN,UK,Saudi's). This scenario gives Israel maximum diplomatic leverage because they have ceased hostilities already. Futher, they will not have to legitimize/recognize Hamas. Palestines are just too stupid to understand the new reality yet.
