Emdens Nordseewerke shipyard on the North Sea is at a crossroads. It was recently sold by ThyssenKrupp, signaling an end to the days when newly built ships disembarked from Emdens docks. But its also a new beginning: The site will become a production hub for components used in off-shore wind turbines. The move has raised hopes in Emden, and most shipyard employees though probably not all of them will be able to stay on. The year 2010 will be crucial for this city on the North Sea coast.
