Pinecrest High School's Chamber Ensemble singing Soneto de la Noche by Morten Lauridsen. Conducted by James Brown.

After nabbing first at the Festival of Gold 2008 Choir Invitational at Chicago (our women's choir Sotto Voce joining us with first in their division), we went back home to continue working on our music.

This is a recording of our 2008 spring concert.

-----------------

Our most difficult song. Also our most emotional. This piece kind of brought everything together for us.

  • very well done!! vocal technique of the choir is exceptional. the group also has an excellent blend, and the parts are well balanced. not an easy piece at all. modulations are executed very well. dynamic contrast is wonderful. if i had to make a constructive comment it would be that i wish the [o] vowels were purer from the men in places (be careful of the sneaking diphthongs), put that is being picky. this is stunning, especially from a high school group. congratulations!

  • I thought that was very well done and was quite musical. Having sung the piece both live and on a recording with a professional choir, I can testify to how difficult it is. Congratulations.

  • I sang this song as a senior in high school and I think your sound is great except for the "whiteness" of your pronunciation of the Spanish text. I'm white and it makes me wince. This piece is gently passionate, musically and lyrically (re-read the English translation) and the lack of a correct accent makes it lack its depth and passion, despite the prettiness & unity of the sound.

Admittedly, Australia probably has a lot less Spanish speakers than the US.

  • don't worry! you are really great! you should be so proud. i'm a senior in college, going into music. i think you sound like a college choir. great blend and very artistic! people on youtube just like to look smart and are overly critical.

  • haha wow, pretty critical on us, we're only high schoolers. i thought we did great.

  • i thought it was great! however it started to go rather sharp at the end of each phrase. and the t's need to be a little more dentailsed but it was great for a high school choir!

  • it's fantastic, but it's a bit too fast for my liking.

  • Well as one of the kids in the choir that singing this piece we greatly appreciate our comments... we put alot of hard work into this and the 3 other pieces

  • Well, the piece is supposed to quicken there, but yes, it's not supposed to be THAT FAST, I believe the fastest it's supposed to go is quarter note = 82, and the section after that, before the forte "Cuando yo muero" should have been slower and could have built up to a little more towards a fortissimo, as that is the climax of the entire piece.

  • Very good for a high school choir. But I'm not a fan of the fast section. That's just my person opinion though.
