Nearly 9,000 Perish in China Quake
CHENGDU, China (May 12) - A powerful earthquake toppled buildings, schools and chemical plants Monday in central China, killing more than 8,700 people and trapping untold numbers in mounds of concrete, steel and earth in the country's worst quake in three decades.
Rescuers in Dujiangyan, China, search for people trapped in a hospital that collapsed Monday after a massive earthquake rocked the central part of the country. More than 8,700 people died, said China's state-run media, and roughly 900 children were trapped in the rubble of a school.
