Awesome lesson man. This is exactly what I've been looking for to get a head start on some of Duane's technique. Not to copy him, just to incorporate some of his style into my slide playing. And this video revealed a lot in just a few minutes. Thanks!

This is great. Been playing for thirty years, slide for the last eight. Some neat tips. Sweet tone and utterly authentic phrasing. Thanks from the UK !

To the guys talking about string guage, try using a heavier string on your high e. If you have a spare b throw that on. A little lighter is better. That extra tension makes it easier to play leads on that string. And as always the bigger the string the fatter the tone, so play em as heavy as you can stand.

Love it specially your statement " in guitar playing there's no rule" nothing can be more true than that ! Thanks for sharing this nice lesson !

actually, Duane used an old Coricidin-D green aspirin bottle.....ok, now play "Dreams"!!!

@fendershed33 flat radius and high action makes it waaay easier.

@Masterallmighty ....yet open E is a tight tuning so I guess the gauge mustn't be too thick either, on internet I found controversial info about Duane's guage, some say it used 010 in open E, some 011, however most people believe he used 010. For this reason I asked John, since he really caught Duane's tone and knows all his tricks, so if he says 011 on a les paul is the right gauge I'll go for it.

@Masterallmighty well I've been playing slide guitar for almost 20 years, but mostly with loose open tunings such as open D and G on a telecaster and 011 gauge, I seldom played open E too with 09 again on a telecaster, a little lose but not that bad. I'm now playing in a southern rock band and got gibson guitars, so yeah I got all figured out as for the playing, I just asked for a suggestion since gibsons have a shorter scale, therefore thicker gauge are normally recommended....
can you play slide with a pick????

I'm a begginer slide student/ Do you think any of the 'ring slides' or other slides are of allman value ? - could you tell me what you like if any? ie: do I have to be abler to cover x number of strings with the slide?

@007gumshoe I use a Mr B's Bottleneck slide. My favorite. It's all personal preference. Go try some out.

what strings gauge would you recommend on a gibson for the open E tuning? 0.10?
