Bernard Hickey says in a Special Report in association with ASB that New Zealand needs to remove the productivity roadblocks stopping our economy from growing faster and generating more wealth. These roadblocks include a lack of a second Southern Cross cable connecting us to the rest of the world, the lack of a 3rd competitor in mobile phones, a clearly uncompetitive electricity industry and a skewed, complicated and hidebound tax system. Unless we remove these roadblocks, New Zealand is destined to remain in a productivity and fiscal black hole that will require lower standards of living from 2020 when baby boomers are retiring in droves.
