in this video john is using a bass called a buzzard. which he designed himself, and got a company called status graphite to make it for him.

there are many upon many different types of bass's.
probably the most famous ones are the percision style bass, and the jazz style bass, originally produced by a company called fender.
but other companies have taken the concept and adapted it for their own products.
the main difference between a percision and a jazz bass are the pickups, and the shape.
percision gives a more raunchy sound
and jazz gives a smoother sound.
