News Channel 15 has followed the story from the start. The Dixie Crystal Imperial Sugar Refinery Explosion happened on the evening of February 7, 2008. Reports came in that nearly 200 people may be injured, but the number quickly lessened to around 75. The injured were rushed to Memorial Health and other hospitals in Savannah, while the critically burned patients were flown to the Still Burn Center in Augusta, GA. The blast claimed the lives of 14 people.

Since the explosion, the Imperial Sugar Refinery CEO, John Sheptor, decided that rebuilding would be the best decision, and so the groundbreaking for a new packaging facility and new sugar silos began late last year.

There has also been a lot of controversy with this blast. OSHA fined Imperial Sugar nearly 9 million dollars total, citing over 200 critical violations at both the Georgia plant and the Imperial Sugar refinery in Louisiana.

Also, Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss lashed out at the former Imperial Sugar VP of operations, Graham H. Graham, who testified in front of Congress that he tried to warn Sheptor of the dangers, but was ignored. Chambliss did not buy the story, and many believed that Chambliss was defending Imperial and CEO Sheptor in exchange for funds or money. The controversy continues.
