I think the Johnny Cash- June Carter version is better

@biggestkrisfan You might want to check out the Tina Turner version; it's pretty good, even though it ain't Kris. Hey, and how about Gordon Lightfoot's Me and Bobby McGee? I always liked the dobro color on that record.

What makes me smile, they were holding hands the whole song over ... They'd better given him his guitar ;-)
-
You actually can hear him say the words before they cut to the violins?? I can't ...

@MrCallipygous ... yep, this really was a funny story to me with her cover; when I read about Sammi and this song for the first time I thought it was a male singer ... But I couldn't find that version on a CD... And when I finally heard it realizing it was a woman I was pretty surprised...

Nice! Thank you!
Now I think Kris simply forgot who had the next line and whispers something like "next line you?" It makes sense because he does sing the line later in the song. Then he says "That's pretty!" as they cut to the violins. Deleted my old posts on this.

OK, not to make you feel you're the only commenter ;-) I know Kris loves to hear other artists sing his songs, but to me - though her voice might be or is great - this song must be sung by a man and sure Kris is the only one that can put in the right emotions and feelings. I'd never prefer any of his songs by another singer than himself... But thanks for the posting.

Kris wrote it for a male, but the song took an unexpected turn when Sammi Smith had a #1 Country hit and top ten pop hit with it. The lyrics were then considered shocking for a female to sing. Many female versions followed and today many people consider the song to be part of the feminist / women's liberation movement of the 70s.
