why don't they make good horror films like these now in days?

For a Western white audience, the real threat and source of terror in these films are not the political vagaries of a postcolonial nation or the plights of the enslaved native zombies, but rather the risk that the white protagonists might become zombies themselves. In other words, the true horror in these movies lies in the prospect of a Westerner becoming dominated, subjugated, and effectively "colonized" by a native pagan.

Not my analysis. I believe I copied that from the Internet. I might have run out of characters to include a source. I simply do not remember. In any event, it was never my intent to take credit for somebody else’s work.

WHITE ZOMBIE is one of the all-time great horror films. Creepily atmospheric with vividly realized characters and a classical, fairy tale narrative structure. The cinematography is exceptional in its lighting set-ups and picturesque framing/composition of shots. The selective use of music is quite effective, especially during the end climax which doesn't have dialog and plays out like a flowing, macabre ballet. Probably Lugosi's best film next to DRACULA.

People don't understand how to put themselves in the mindset of the audience this was created for. It's unfortunate .

A person either has an appreciation for old movies, or they don't. There is a creepiness in these old ones that cannot exist in newer movies. It's contrived creepiness, and it depends much on the public minds back then, which if you watch old movies must have been very different than today. It makes no difference to me that it's contrived creepiness. It's creepy. And that's just plain fun. New films depend on over-masturbation of augmented reality, whereas old movies are lost art.
