Of the eight million pets that enter animal shelters and rescue groups every year, approximately three million of these healthy and treatable pets are euthanized due to a lack of adoption. While there has been steady progress on the issue, the continued euthanasia of our best friends and family members is a national tragedy.

Adopting a pet is a life-changing and enriching experience. It not only saves an animal's life, but adopted pets also provide unconditional love, affection and attention. Research has even shown that owning a pet has many positive psychological and physical health benefits.

Presently, most people do not obtain their pets from shelters, but rather from pet stores, the Internet, friends, breeders or other sources. In an effort to change this trend, The Shelter Pet Project is designed to encourage pet lovers throughout the country to make shelters and rescue groups the first place they turn to when acquiring companion animals. Campaign ads use humor to give shelter pets a voice and break down negative stereotypes; contrary to popular beliefs, animals most frequently find themselves in shelters due to owner-related issues.

At the http://www.theshelterpetproject.org users will find information about how to adopt from a shelter, as well as a fun matching tool designed to help potential pet owners identify traits to look for in an animal. Based on results, it will even supply a list of suitable pets avilable in local shelters. Other fun and interactive tools are also available, all in an effort to significantly increase the rate of pet adoption.

SHE DID NOT LIKE CATS...I asked her which shelter...she told me..I went there...got my cats back...they were so scared, till they saw me...Came back home...she argued with me..I said..Dont unpack...leave now..MY HOUSE..MY CATS..MY FRIENDS!

  • I was divorced, too. I would live in my car or under a bridge before I would take my dogs to a shelter.

  • @sync380 No kidding - I'd need my pet even more if going through a breakup.

  • @JoeMust You're the man!

  • i cant belive they forgot the poor dog

  • @sequoyahbean What if you were down on your luck? Wouldn't you consider what's best for your pets?

  • Why would anyone dump the pet if the couple got divorced. This doesn't make any god damn sense, obviously someone wanted it to begin with so they would end up taking it.

  • thats so sad!

  • I got divorced, I ended up with my cats, his dog, and his cat (he left his dog, and said his girlfriend was allergic to cats.) So I had 3 cats and a golden retriever. I found a place to live that had a yard for the dog (at higher expense than if I hadn't needed the space) and I moved them all, with me, 150 miles to another state, a few years later, when I was laid off and relocated.

There are reasons to surrender your pets, but 'Convenience' is not one of them.

  • I got divorced and had to move away from my home town but my cat came with me. There was no way in hell I would ever let my cat go to a shelter.
