He traveled through time and in order to prevent the event that he had seen, namely the death of his girlfriend.

the reason he laughed is because he traveled through time and saw what the future held. in order for him to save the girls life and others he had to die.

I have never seen this movie. The only thing I know about it, is that it's directed by Richard Kelly-who is known for directing very strange and confusing movies. Did you see the movie he directed called Southland Tales? Very strange movie! So, what is the plot of Donnie Darko?

i think "mad world" and donnie darko really match.
the song is from the perspective of a nihilistic teen, and donnie can be seen as pretty angsty and conflicted many times.
the song talks about people going about their routine, even though in the end it doesnt matter. In the movie, donnie is contrasted from everyone, as they are all going about their business, while he is searching for the truth.
the song talks about dreams of dying, and in the movie, Donnie's fated to die to save our reality

@SemperParati187, A lot of interpretations on it, but one of the more prominent one is that the whole movie he was in an alternate reality, at the end he has to destroy his reality in order to save the actual reality (our world's reality). I just listen to the director's podcast and he said this is true or at least the closest to his intention.
