@unopeneddoor yeah i know he was happy because he was finally dying and he even said that he has so much to look forward to. So yeah he was happy at the end cause he was getting rid of the pain for once since no one understood him when he was alive.

One of the most moving scenes I've ever seen in a movie is where Donnie's mom, Mary McDonnell cannot understand her him but offers her unbounded empathy (at 2:58, in this video), and strokes his face. Stunning.
