This feels like animal abuse to me :( why do they have to be kept in a machine alive for who knows how long?

Chinese mitten crabs (or hairy crabs). Never had 'em but they're one of the most popular and expensive crabs you can find in China. These crabs can't be found just anywhere so having them sold in such a location seems convenient. The whole thing about keeping them alive is that once dead, the quality of the meat deteriorates quickly. The temperature of 5 degrees Celsius will induce sleep so the crabs aren't really suffering...might be a little cramped though.

The last time I heard anything called a crab vending machine it was the local hooker on main street.

@SCDragoon Well I'm Asian. So of course I see my family eat crabs but not live like this. If people bought this and they didn't have a kitchen or stove or whatever to cook them, do you think they're going to eat it raw? ^.^
