This is a great old Waits song from 1973. You can tell how old it is he uses the word "split" as in he split the scene. Been I while since I heard that, and the lady he's watching in a bar lights a cigarette. We will have no more smoking in bars. I still find that weird and I don't smoke. Typical Tom song it's a short story so it takes me awhile to get it all out but I think it's great song and a great story. This is a late night contemplation song best listened to with headphones and a glass of wine....or stout, whatever you prefer.

Second thing I wanted to talk about the guitar I used here. Kind of an interesting story. Whenever I have time during my travels I stop in music shops. Kind of momentary escape then back to work. I spotted this old Goya guitar in a shop not too far from home. It had been there awhile based on the dust on the outside and the dust bunnies in the sound hole. I knew that some of the old Goyas were handmade with solid woods and excellent materials. I wrote down the information from the tag and got on line and researched it. I found out from the serial number that this was a handmade Goya produced in Sweden in 1964. Furthermore this was the same guitar make and model that Julie Andrews used in the sound of music. A 1965 Goya G-10 classical guitar is what she used. Her signed Goya from the movie recently sold at auction for $140,000. I had to have it after reading about it. I went back and struck a deal, if you knock three zero's off of Julies guitar that's about what I paid. Then I took it apart, cleaned and straitened, glued and patched, restrung it, tweaked and fiddled, and then she started to come back to life. I put an electronic pick up under the strings to amplify the sound a little and wow! I don't know what it will sound like on Youtube but live it almost sounds like a little harp. Not fancy but extremely well crafted and the old wood just has wonderful tone. I think I just blogged.

"I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" Tom Waits 1973

Well I hope that I don't fall in love with you
'Cause falling in love just makes me blue,
Well the music plays and you display your heart for me to see,
I had a beer and now I hear you calling out for me
And I hope that I don't fall in love with you.
Well the room is crowded, there's people everywhere
And I wonder, should I offer you a chair?
Well if you sit down with this old clown, take that frown and break it,
Before the evening's gone away, I think that we could make it,
And I hope that I don't fall in love with you.
I can see that you are lonesome just like me, and it being late,
You'd like some some company,
Well I've had two, I look at you, and you look back at me,
The guy you're with has up and split, the chair next to you's free,
And I hope that you don't fall in love with me.
And I hope that you don't fall in love with me.
Now it's closing time, the music's fading out
Last call for drinks, I'll have another stout.
Turn around to look at you, you're nowhere to be found,
I search the place for your lost face, guess I'll have another round
And I think that I just fell in love with you.

  • Incredible song and performance! I do know this Tom Waits song. Long time fav! I stopped going to bars when they banned smoking. Where I live its now legal to buy medical marijuana but its illegal to smoke cigarettes in bars. The times they are a changin. Outstanding!

  • @coolanddark The Goya Guitar sounds great! Cool story about how you brought her back to life!

  • @coolanddark

Yeah she was a great find. Looks good in the dark. In the light she looks a little better than Willie's Martin "Trigger", but not much better.

  • @coolanddark

Crazy isnt it? I used to smoke an occasional cigar especially in bars while perfecting my douche bag persona. I walk into a bar now....no smoke, lights are all the way up, hip hop music playing. Sucks! I used to like that smell in my clothes and hair (when I had some) the next morning. Reminded me that I must have had a good time. Thanks Dan!
